PT MMS president director Krist Ade Sudiyono said the system used dedicated short range communication technology to connect the device installed inside vehicles known as an onboard unit.
He said the technology worked on the basis of the exchange of information between the units and the readers that were placed on the toll roads.
Toll road operators are expected to soon implement a multi-lane free flow (MLFF) system. Under the system, toll road users do not need to stop to make payment.
The system is being simulated along the Tangerang-Merak toll road, which is managed by PT Marga Mandalasakti (MMS).
“To apply the system, both toll operators and motorists need to be ready,” said Krist on Thursday.
He said for the simulation, the readers were installed at the entrance gates in West Serang and Cikande as well as exit gates in Cikupa and East Serang.
Toll Road Regulatory Agency member Agita Widjajanto said the government wanted to push the application of the system to make the traffic along toll roads smoother and more efficient.
“Before we apply the system, we will carry out a trial. We hope the new system benefits toll road users,” he added. (bbn)
